What does the DH market look like after the Justin Turner signing?

If you have not seen, Justin Turner signed with AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays after a one-year stint in Boston. The deal is worth 13m$ and can reach 14.5m$ with a few different incentives. This was an important signing for the DH market because it took one major team off the board as well as an arguably top 3 DH bat off the market. The Blue Jays seemed to have touched base with almost every DH in this offseason such as Shohei Ohtani, Jorge Soler, and Joc Pederson as well as a couple others. With another team and bat off the board, we can evaluate and predict how the rest of the DH market will shake out this offseason.

Teams Searching For DH Bats

Here is a list of teams that I think should be signing DH bats:

Red Sox

Angels

Mets

Padres

Giants

Rangers

Cubs

Jorge Soler

Prediction: Red Sox

The best remaining bat in the free agent market is Jorge Soler coming off a season where he hit a monster 36 HR and finished with a .853 OPS which was good for 18th best in the MLB. It is really hard to find a suitor for Soler because he deserves a decent chunk of money, but there do not seem to be many suitors after the Mariners, Jays, and D-Backs have all made moves to cover their DH spot. I am going to take the Red Sox, but there have been plenty of reports that have suggested that the Red Sox are not willing to spend due to financial issues. A likely scenario is a trade of Masataka Yoshida to open up the DH spot for Soler as well as help pay for Soler's eventual contract. With all of this in mind, I would not be surprised if Soler takes a one-year deal somewhere random and tests his luck again in next year's free agent market.

J.D. Martinez

Prediction: Angels

Another plausible DH bat that is still available is veteran J.D. Martinez. Martinez had a very good 2023 where he racked up 33 HRs as well as posting an .893 OPS. Martinez is 36 but has shown no signs of slowing down after posting three straight all-star seasons. With his age in mind, I would imagine that he is going to settle for a 1 or 2-year deal with a higher AAV. I like the Angels as a suitor because they have been shown to spend some money and are currently about 35-40m under their payroll from 2023. The glaring issue with Martinez to the Angels would be keeping Trout and Rendon on the field after both have shown issues with staying on the field. I don't see a Martinez and Red Sox reunion likely, so we will go with the Angels as a process of elimination based on his estimated contract numbers. Like Soler, his market is kind of unpredictable because of him seeking a 1 year deal with many teams still searching for a DH bat.

Tommy Pham

Prediction: Nationals

Tommy Pham is a hybrid corner outfielder and DH guy due to some underwhelming defensive numbers. His market is interesting because he has had an inconsistent last few years and it is tough to know what to expect from him. I would imagine that Pham would be searching for an everyday starter role in the outfield but may have to settle for a DH spot. I think that a team like the Nats would be willing to throw money at him, giving him an everyday role, and then trading him at the deadline if his numbers are attractive.

Other Bats

Austin Meadows: Rockies

Jesse Winker: Pirates

Evan Longoria: Tigers

Ji-Man Choi: Athletics

Brandon Belt: Mets
